Point

It's in the abstract. University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I glanced through the article. There's a lot of science in it.

There is a paragraph that states "A comparison between carbonated and noncarbonated waters...showed that carbonated waters averaged significantly higher TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)...concentrations than noncarbonated brands."

It's in the abstract. Quintessence Publishing.

"The Abrasive Efffect of Glazed, Unglazed and Polished Porcelain on the Wear of Human Enamel, and the Influence of Carbonated Soft Drinks on the Rate of Wear," International Journal of Prosthodontics, 1997, Volume 10, Issue 3, pp 269-282. I could only find the abstract. Maybe the article is in the library. It does say soft drinks. The trouble is worth the apology perk package if I can back it up.

Is Allison still smoking Crack?

Counterpoint

I think carbonation is great! And any of you who think its bad for you: you are probably good smart people, but you are wrong. I am sorry, that's the way it is.

The idea that those delightful bubbles steal your bone calcium comes from a study that used cola. Caffeine has been shown to cause calcium deficiencies. My lovely fizz has not. Woohoo!

Bubbles for some, small American flags for the rest!

Shostakovich symphony no. 5
especially the 2nd and 4th movements
Here's what Schostakovich had to say about the peice himself: "I think that it is clear to everyone what happens in the Fifth . . . It's as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, 'Your businness is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing' and you rise, shakily, and go off muttering, 'Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing'."

From Wikipedia, the electronic solver of disputes

"Ingredients and Preparation

Refried beans are prepared with either black or pinto beans. Once the beans have been prepared charola style (ie the raw beans are soaked overnight and then stewed) they are drained of most of the liquid remaining, made into a paste with the back of a large flat spoon and fried with lard or vegetable oil typically in a cast iron pot or skillet. Usually, onion, garlic and spices are sautéed in the oil before the beans are added. The recooked beans are then partially or completely mashed and bean or chicken stock is added if the consistency is too dry."

It turns out...

You are all special. And by you, I mean you. All of you. And each of you.

At FHE tonight at the Wahrd, we had a great lesson about finding out our "Divine Worth" and rejecting those messages that bring us down. Don't let the world get you down, I learned. Basically it was neat to see 50 young adults come to the conclusion (in so many words...) that the media is out to get us all on prozac and in a gym. And that we are children of God who have a lot more capacity than we think to overcome our insecurities.

I just want each of you to know...

Rest in peace, Soup Bag.

Due to continued public outcry (not to mention my mom telling me to), our dear friend Soup Bag has gone to a large, roughly cylindrical, heavy black plastic grave.

Memorial services will be held at probably about 10:00 Tuesday morning, when Soup Bag will be dumped into a large metal hearse and taken to its chosen burial site at The Landfill cemetary, there to await the great and final day of the Lord.

Ave atque vale, Soup Bag. Your pleasant orange color and vaguely spicy scent we will forever retain in memory. You will be sorely missed.

This has happened to me twice in seven years.

We take for granted trip-odometers, intuition and even the promptings of the still small voice. Let this be a lesson to you all. Don't let that needle dip too far left of the slash. When the car starts coughing you're in trouble.

I was on South Temple between Main and State. Car starts coughing and then the wheel locks up. Fortunately I was in the right-hand lane. A gentleman walks up to put another quarter in his meter while a lady exits the where I needed to park my car.

"Sir," I say in my outside voice. "I just ran out of gas. Could you help me push my car into that spot right?"

"Sure." People are willing to help if you ask.

More to come.

For T.R. and Jeremy . . .

. . . and anyone else who wants to try it.

BRAIN MASALA
2 Cow Brains or 4 Sheep Brains
4 medium Onion (peeled & finely chopped)
4 Green Chillies (Hari Mirch) (chopped)
2 Lemons (Nimbu)
1/2 tbsp. of Red Chilli Powder (Pisi Lal Mirch)
1 1/2 tbsp. of Coriander Powder (Pisa Dhania)
1 tsp. of Garam Masala
Salt (to taste)
1 tsp. of Ginger Paste (Pisi Adrak)
1 tsp. of Garlic Paste (Pisa Lasan)
1/2 cup of Curd
1 cup of Cooking Oil

For Garnish
1 small piece of Ginger (Adrak) (finely chopped lengthways)
A bunch of Fresh Coriander/Cilantro Leaves (Hara Dhania) (chopped)

--Directions--
Brain Masalah
1) Wash the brain thoroughly and boil in water. After boiling remove the brain from the water and remove any membrane and nerves carefully. Cut brain into small pieces.

2) Heat cooking oil in a pot or karai and fry the sliced onion until they are golden brown. Remove half of the onions and set aside. To the onion in the pan, add the spices, ginger paste, garlic paste, curd, green chillies and salt. Fry well for about 10 minutes by adding a little water if needed.

3) Add the brain and holding the pan by the handles, gently shake the pan to mix. Do not stir with a spoon. When the oil separates, sprinkle with chopped coriander, lemon juice, finely chopped ginger and the remaining brown onion.

Blind Date

Sometimes I wonder if people really think about who they set you up with. Are the only qualifications that the two people are single(and by two people I mean me and the random guy my friends set me up with). I dunno. Also I have to say my favorite thing about getting set up is the selling process. You know when your friend calls and says "He's so nice, blah blah blah, he's really funny... he's kinda ____ and _____ but so nice..." Then I wonder what are my selling points and what are my "she's kinda _______ and _______ but so____!"

Dear Old Greenland and Michelle's Pic of the Week

Friends, Greenland is a place where souls go to dry out
It is a vast and terrifying place of ice fields and tundra
Bereft of fire and in the horror of its imposing irrelevance
There is a sort of peace
The peace of pain
The peace of nothing
Well friends, I'm going there

If life is stagnant, and I know, I know it is lonely, I say to you: Live the magic by spending your hard earned tax refund on a new CD by Andrew Bird. The Mysterious Production of Eggs? Bowl of Fire?? Read a book!
And also, thanks to TR who gave birth to this lovely brainchild.

Could someone explain this one? And when I say "someone" I mean "TR." Read a book. A coincidence...I think not -Allison

Baseball season.

I have a little smile on my face because baseball is the best sport known to man. I love baseball. Some can sit and watch football, hockey or cricket on TV. I can do it with baseball. It's the crack of the bat, the taste of the hot dog, the sound of the crowd. The Boys of Summer are coming back to treat us to series after series of the greatest game invented.

And now, a Simpsons reference:

Well Mr. Burns had done it.
The Power Plant had won it.
With Roger Clements clucking all the while,
Mike Socia's tragic illness made us smile,
While Wade Boggs laid unconscious on the bar-room tile.

We're talking softball.
From Maine to San Diego.
Were talking softball, Mattingly and Conseco,
Ken Griffy's grotesquely swollen jaw
Steve Sax and his run-in with the law,
We're talking Homer...Ozzy and the Straw.
